The Viscondessa

Isabel Beatriz de Azevedo Pereira e Sousa, born on November 23, 1837, in Urzelina, played a significant role in the history of São Jorge. Married to one of the sons of Lieutenant Colonel Miguel Teixeira Soares de Sousa, she managed Quinta da Bacelada, a vital property for over two centuries.
Royal Recognition: Recognizing her contributions, King D. Carlos bestowed upon her the title of Viscondessa de São Mateus on October 25, 1894. This title is closely tied to the Urzelina parish, the birthplace of the Viscondessa and the location of our accommodation.

Symbolism in our Logo

Our logo depicts the urzela (Roccella tinctoria), a lichen characteristic of the Azores. Once a sought-after dye for textiles until the late 17th century, urzela was abundant on the basaltic coastal rocks, leading to the naming of the Urzelina parish.
